Backyard Cat Photoshoot

You might think, “There’s no way my cat would cooperate for a backyard photo session.” However, if your cat normally spends time in the yard, it can work! Most backyards are enclosed with tall fences, so cats aren’t usually making a run for it. They’re more likely settle into a favorite sunny spot, watch the squirrels’ antics, or stroll along the fence line.

And just to be clear: I never suggest letting a cat outside for photos if it’s not already part of their routine. Safety and comfort come first, always. The goal is to capture your cat as they truly are, in an environment they know and enjoy.

I photographed this cat outside his back door, where he liked to catch the afternoon sunbeams. It was a warm winter day and the colors matched him perfectly.

Turn your backyard into the perfect stage for your cat. Relaxed home photoshoots are easier than you think!

One great thing about doing a photoshoot at home is that all your pets can join in. While I took pictures of the family’s dogs, their cat, curious about what I was doing, wandered around the backyard, giving me the chance to snap photos of her as well.

All the pets in your household – cats AND dogs – are included in your session fee. I can capture your cats at home on the same day as your dog’s photoshoot or dedicate a special session just for them. If you have multiple pets, your backyard might be the most convenient and safest option for your pack.

Siamese cat sitting on fence outdoors in Boulder, Colorado

Hobbes’ family worried he might run off during backyard photos, so I started by photographing him inside. When we moved outside, he became the perfect model, calmly sitting on his favorite spot on the fence while I took photos.

Turn Your Cat’s Photo into Art

Hobbes’ family chose this photo as their favorite and framed it with a solid hardwood walnut frame. I can help you turn your cat’s photo into fine art too!

I was able to get an action shot of Pluto jumping in the safety of his own yard. We also took photos indoors first.

A backyard can be a perfect spot for taking photos. With the right light, a garden, patio, or even a patch of grass can look wild and natural.

The key is letting them do what they normally do, whether that’s stretching out in a sunny spot or walking around their little kingdom. Those everyday habits often turn into natural portraits, and I’ve seen it work beautifully for many of my clients.
