How to Photograph Running Dogs

If you’ve ever tried to take a photo of your dog mid-run, you know it’s not exactly straightforward. Your dogs might sprint toward you with wild eyes and flapping ears, but by the time you tap the shutter button, they’ve already zoomed past or turned the wrong way.

But with the right approach, those action shots are the kind of images that make all the effort worth it. Here’s how I make it work.

My method for photographing fast-moving dogs

My assistant stands at the end of a path with the dog on a leash. On the count of three, my assistant releases the leashes and quickly steps out of frame. Meanwhile, the dog’s people are behind me, calling their names and offering treats. The goal is for the dog to run straight toward the camera while I shoot from a low angle to capture that energy head-on.

We always choose a location with safety in mind, just in case. These young golden retrievers were high-energy so we picked a spot with bushes on the sides of the path so they’d stay on trail. My husband, Dan, was hiding behind the bush to release the dogs, and their family was behind me with treats.

I use a very fast shutter speed, and I photograph from down low to give the image a sense of drama and movement. I usually end up sitting on the ground, focused on getting the best shot.

Running around the backyard shed was super fun for this pup! I love it when the dogs feel like their photoshoot is just a fun playtime.

Before any running takes place, we select a safe, open location with soft ground and good lighting. I walk clients through what to expect so everyone feels set up for success.

Believe it or not, these photos were taken in the dog’s backyard. I’ll be creative with angles so your dog looks like he’s having an adventure. But in reality, the warm indoors is steps away.

There’s something fun about an action shot because it strips away the posing. For many people, this is how they want to remember their dog. Not just sitting still and looking pretty but running straight toward them with joy in their eyes.
